| The clock on the front of the building has a history of its own. At that time every parish had the duty of
housing its poor. The appropriate institution for Dorchester stood near the southern end of South Street and was
demolished when it became redundant. So it came about that the clock was saved and passed over to
Nappers Mite. This clock was presented to that institution by the then Lord Shaftesbury, in 1745. These parochial
establishments were abolished in 1837. It was then that the "workhouse" in Damers Road was erected, (now demolished
except for the chapel, the site forms part of the West Dorset District Hospital constructed during the last fifteen
