The Manor House

Francis Holles was the second Baronet of Winterborne Saint Martin

He built "a large house" in the village in 1654.

Today, its remains can be seen where the river flows in front of the Manor

William Hawkins (1797 - 1866) came to the village from Waddon and was known as "Hawkins from over the hill"

His son, Charles Hawkins, demolished the Jacobean house in 1851.

He placed the original stone marked "F.H 1654" (Francis Holles) over the back door of a new residence

This new house became known as the Manor House

The memorials in many Dorset churches show how formidable were the hazards of growing up in the eighteenth century. In Martinstown parish church Charles Hawkins and his wife Frances mourn the death, before their early thirties, of seven of their sixteen children.
