CHURCH NOTES |
This is one of a small group of churches founded by St Aldhelm in the 8th century. Like the nearby priory at Wareham, it was sacked by the Danish invasion in the ninth century and only the walls were left standing. They remained in the area until defeated by King Alfred in A.D. 877. The 12th century Norman building was built on the remains of the earlier church to substantially the same size and plan. Although it may have begun with St Aldhelm, this church facing the sea, was dedicated to St Nicholas, the guardian of sailors |
