FONT NOTES
Described by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments as a plain stone tub with circular base set on a modern plinth, 12th century. A handbook available in the church further describes it as being of Purbeck Stone, and is probably Norman, though it may well be the font of the original Saxon church. A very similar fonts is found nearby at Chaldon Herring. Compare also to the font at North Porton

CHURCH NOTES

This is one of a small group of churches founded by St Aldhelm in the 8th century. Like the nearby priory at Wareham, it was sacked by the Danish invasion in the ninth century and only the walls were left standing. They remained in the area until defeated by King Alfred in A.D. 877. The 12th century Norman building was built on the remains of the earlier church to substantially the same size and plan. Although it may have begun with St Aldhelm, this church facing the sea, was dedicated to St Nicholas, the guardian of sailors
