1st Century Roman Tablet, The Church of St George,

Found on February 5th 1907, this Purbeck Marble inscription dates from the middle of the 1st Century. When it was found it was set as a foundation stone under the Norman porch. It weighs 3/4 of a ton and measures 2ft 11in by 2ft 4 in. Four stones of similar size remain beneath the floor.

The Roman Inscription may be translated to:

To the spirits of the departed
for Carinus, a Roman Citizen
aged 50 years, Rufinus and
Carinus and Avita his children
Romans his wife
had this set up.

Eius et Romana Uxor
Faciendum Curaverunt
